Ted Dodds

Ted Dodds, CIO of UBC IT since 1997, has taken on new duties at the University of British Columbia. In September the Board of Governors announced that Ted has been appointed to the role of Vice Provost, Information Technology.

Ted’s mandate is to identify and develop opportunities to apply innovations in information technology that will enhance core academic functions in research, teaching and student engagement -- including the implementation of Kuali Student at UBC. Leading a team of strategically focused professionals, Ted is now working with the academic leadership and other key stakeholders -- internal and external -- to ensure that our academic enterprise is enabled with information technology.

Richard Spencer and Jens Haeusser recently joined the Vice Provost’s office, along with Catherine Chick, Leo Fernig, and Cath Fairlie.  Additional team members will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Ted Dodds will continue to head up the University’s e-Strategy initiative, which enables UBC staff, students and faculty to excel with technology.

Oliver Gruter-AndrewOliver Grüter-Andrew -- the new Chief Information Officer at UBC -- is an IT professional who has been working with UBC’s leadership team to help define a new vision for IT service delivery on campus. Oliver also participated in our Town Hall meeting last June as a member of the Panel Discussion responding to the Keynote Address.

These changes are a direct result of the 2008 External Review of UBC IT, which recommended that UBC should recognize and position information technology as a strategic enabler of the core academic mission, and that the University should invest in excellence in the delivery of IT infrastructure and services.

2009 Spencer Awards for IT Innovation at UBC

estrategy_logo The award is presented annually at the e-Strategy Town Hall held each June. This year the Spencer Award was presented on Tuesday, June 23rd at UBC’s Forest Sciences Centre.

The winner is Jim Sibley, Manager of the Centre for Instruction Support at the Faculty of Applied Science.

During the presentation of the certificate and $1,000 cheque at Town Hall, Dr. Spencer noted:

"Jim Sibley has a long track record of IT innovation at UBC.  One prominent example is his open source, online peer evaluation service called iPeer.

iPeer has significantly improved workflow -- and removed a major logistical hurdle – for faculty who use teams in their courses.
Workflow and logistics are also improved for the students who use this service to evaluate and provide feedback to their team-mates.  iPeer is currently being used at UBC and a number of other institutions around the world.  4,000 downloads pretty well tells the success story there.

Jim has actively supported UBC’s mission to provide the best possible resources and conditions for learning and research.  He has shown his support for this mission through the faculty of Applied Science…and campus-wide…to implement novel approaches for optimal use of IT in the classroom.

His Untethered Computing Initiative allows instructors with tablet PCs to use wireless technology as they walk about the classroom and engage their students.

Jim Sibley contributes to a wide range of faculty, campus, and international committees and initiatives.

He has shown Innovation, Vision, and Leadership in his many years at UBC.  He is a worthy recipient of the 2009 Spencer Award for IT Innovation."  ( Watch the video and see photos here )
